No-exam life insurance

What fast-track underwriting covers, how the approval process works, and what to expect if you don't qualify.

Increasingly, insurance companies offer fast-track underwriting: for applicants within age and coverage limits, they render a decision using your application details, med history records, DMV records, and other existing data without requiring a physical exam. Decisions on some applications happen within hours. Each carrier quote displays whether an exam is mandatory, optional, or not required for that particular product.

What it changes

Skipping a medical exam doesn't mean the carrier skips investigating. The underwriter will verify what you told them, and a policy issued based on dishonest answers can be challenged for up to two years afterward. The carrier might also request testing or bloodwork based on what they discover; if that happens, you're free to proceed or withdraw.

Who tends to qualify

Most applicants below age 60 who request amounts within the carrier's fast-track limit and who report good health and no tobacco use may qualify. Some carriers will accept lab work from a recent doctor's visit in place of a separate exam.

Should the carrier request an exam, you'll typically meet with a paramedical technician for 20 to 30 minutes at a location of your choice in the Cathedral City region—your home, workplace, or elsewhere—with zero charge to you. For applicants in good health, the exam outcome frequently results in a better rate classification, so it's not necessarily a negative factor.
