Health classes explained

The four main categories—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—explained, plus what determines which group you fall into.

Life insurance pricing hinges on health classification. Though terminology differs slightly from carrier to carrier, the system is consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Superior Preferred or Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, plus extra charges for elevated risk. People who smoke or vape are graded on their own ladder at higher rates.

What underwriters look at

Physical measurements (height relative to weight), blood pressure and cholesterol readings, family medical history before age 60 (specifically heart problems and cancers), record of traffic violations, medications you're taking, what you do for work and hobbies, and cigarette or nicotine product use. The top classification demands near-perfect marks on almost everything; the Preferred tier permits some deviation; Standard Plus and Standard tiers accommodate managed health problems, including medically regulated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

In the questionnaire, describe your current health truthfully: Excellent lines up with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. The quote you receive matches that group, but the underwriter finalizes the actual group after evaluating your application. In doubt? Run quotes across multiple health categories to compare, then allow the underwriting to establish where you belong. Overstating your health won't reduce your premium; it simply makes your quote less realistic.

The agency team can guide you to carriers whose approval standards are most favorable for your particular situation, a detail that frequently outweighs small differences in the advertised rate.
